National Library of Medicine Acquires the Papers of Louis W. Sullivan, MD

The Countrywide Library of Medication (NLM) is honored to announce its acquisition of the papers of Louis W. Sullivan, MD, former United States Secretary of Wellness and Human Providers (HHS). This is the 1st selection of papers from a former HHS Secretary, obtained by the NLM and will be component of the archival collections of the world’s major health care library and institute of the Countrywide Institutes of Wellness (NIH).

Louis W. Sullivan is an African American medical professional who served as secretary of HHS from 1989-1993 and as dean and president of Morehouse College of Medication (MSM) from 1975-1989 and from 1993-2002. The Countrywide Institute on Minority Wellness and Wellness Disparities at NIH was 1st recognized as an Office environment below the NIH Director via Secretary Sullivan in 1990 and was elevated to an Institute in 2010.

The Louis W. Sullivan Papers consist of Dr. Sullivan’s HHS chronological correspondence, motion/briefing files, each day calendars, speeches, news clippings, White House memorabilia, function pictures, and honorary levels and awards. The selection files Secretary Sullivan’s endeavours to teach the public on the hazards of tobacco use, together with halting the introduction of Uptown, a cigarette designed for internet marketing to minority communities introduce new and improved meals labels initiate a $one hundred million minority male wellness and harm prevention initiative and increase the Countrywide Institutes of Wellness price range more than $5 billion.

About his time as Secretary, Dr. Sullivan stated: “I am grateful for the chance to have served as U.S. Secretary of Wellness and Human Providers, throughout a substantial time to oversee the growth of its courses and contribute to the racial, ethnic, and gender range of its management. This increased the department’s outreach to all Us residents.”

Dr. Sullivan acquired his undergraduate degree from Morehouse School in 1954 and his health care degree in 1958 from Boston University College of Medication.

Right after holding positions at Harvard Clinical College, Seton Hall School of Medication, Boston University Clinical Centre, and Boston Town Clinic, Dr. Sullivan returned to Morehouse School in 1975 to provide as dean and director of the Clinical Education and learning System. Underneath his management, the Clinical Education and learning System became impartial from Morehouse School in 1981 and was renamed Morehouse College of Medication (MSM). Dr. Sullivan served as president and dean of MSM prior to and following his tenure as secretary of HHS. He was also chair of the President’s Board of Advisors on Traditionally Black Schools and Universities from 2002-2009 and was co-chair of the President’s Fee on HIV and AIDS from 2001-2006. 

Dr. Sullivan is chairman of the Sullivan Alliance to Completely transform the Wellness Professions and is the founding president of the Association of Minority Wellness Professions Colleges (AMHPS). He is the creator of The Morehouse Mystique: Starting to be a Doctor at the Nation’s Most recent African American Clinical College (with Marybeth Gasman, 2012, Johns Hopkins University Push) and his autobiography Breaking Ground: My Lifestyle in Medication (with David Chanoff, 2014, University of Georgia Push).

The NLM Record of Medication Division properties the papers of outstanding public wellness leaders, together with other officials of the U.S. Office of Wellness and Human Providers (and its predecessor the U.S. Office of Wellness, Education and learning and Welfare), together with Faye Abdellah, Edward Brandt, Emery Johnson, and June Osborn the papers of NIH Administrators Harold Varmus, Bernadine Healy, Donald Fredrickson, James A. Shannon, Robert Marston and the papers of Surgeons Standard Regina Benjamin, Jocelyn Elders, C. Everett Koop, Antonia Novello, Julius Richmond, and Luther Terry.
