Kai Lenny Joins Pro Bike Team, Talks Benefits of Cycling

With the pandemic’s end nearer in sight for the U.S., several among us are taking stock of all that we’ve accomplished in the previous fifteen months with disrupted schedules and considerably less journey. Yes, you watched all of Yellowstone. You figured out how to make sourdough. Probably you bought the calves you always desired? Did you at minimum clean the garage?

Nicely, what does a dude like Kai Lenny do? How does a dude who previously owned the windsurfing and paddle racing scenes—that is, before he pioneered foiling, served reshape big-wave tow surfing, then each individual after in a whilst, make some heats in World Surf League events—spend that down time?

To begin, Lenny, like most of us, was confined by global journey limitations. Contrary to most of us, he experienced the South Pacific Ocean to function and participate in in. But interestingly plenty of, Lenny seemed to the land this time for his future jolt of pleasure. He started out using a street bicycle.

And of course, in scenario you’ve committed your life to cycling…he’s previously greater than you.

“During the pandemic summertime, we started out using like a few days a week because I was in this article,” Lenny says. “A community group of my mates who are also professional surfers started out acquiring really competitive. We came up with strategies to press each other. It served as a wonderful crossover to provide our goals and ambitions on the h2o.”

Of course, the situations dictated their days. When the ocean called for it, Lenny was using wind or wave. There was mountain biking. He upped his gym workout routines to twice a working day, 4 days a week. And he started out dialing in the 8-foot halfpipe in his yard, which has a unique harness that mitigates injuries for board-consciousness coaching.

But the street biking is what grew to become his new aim, using with the likes of big-wave charger Ian Walsh, WQS competitor Ian Gentile, the legendary Buzzy Kerbox’s son Kody Kerbox, and other unique waterman appearances.

“John John and Nathan Florence are really into street biking as very well on Oahu. It’s enjoyable obtaining that surf group into it. With diverse apps, we can keep competitive with each other.

And now Lenny is actually aspect of the initially U.S. Crew for Pinarello, the storied Italian bicycle model. They’re contacting the ambassador plan ‘Scuderia,’ an Italian phrase for team.

Lenny is just 1 member of the Scuderia. The relaxation of the squad is also interesting and various, which includes BMX star Jamie Bestwick, ski mountaineer Meredity Edwards as very well as Amitty Rockwell, Mari Holden, Adam Roberge and Jess Cerra, from all throughout the biking planet.

Lenny has always been acquainted with the tradition.

“Cycling has been in the family members due to the fact my mom was a professional bicycle racer and won a lot of point out titles in Oregon and competed all in excess of the country,” says Lenny. (By the way, mom Paula Lenny was also an Occupational Drugs Specialist—full family members of overachievers.)

Lenny remembers stories of how she would attack on the hill climbs of a race.

“That was always my inspiration out on the h2o,” he says. “When situations are most tough, that’s when you attack.”

Lenny bought into biking when he was twelve.

“It’s served as a wonderful coaching tool,” he clarifies. “Whether it is for restoration, actually making my lunch capability for big waves or acquiring greater leg stamina, that was always my intention.”

Lenny is pedaling Pinarello’s Grevil, the SRAM AXS power create. He credits a big piece of all this to Donny Arnoult, an elite street and mountain bicycle racer who moved to Maui in 1999, started out a bicycle tour enterprise and opened Maui Cyclery. He has always been a resource for Lenny and taken him on rides through the yrs.

“The issue that always keeps me intrigued on Maui is that I was in a position to journey so several diverse conditions—from climbing ten,000 ft to the top rated of Haleakalā, our largest volcano on Maui, to coastal rides, jungle, gravel, rather substantially everything you can ever want on this island in the Pacific,” Lenny clarifies.

He talks about using the Skyline, up the national park throughout the mountain towards the South Shore with several of the other islands visible on a distinct working day exactly where the airplanes are actually below them, taking off and landing.

Lenny hardly ever anticipated to be doing work with a bicycle enterprise.

“But now that I’m acquiring concerned with the Scuderia Pinarello, it is just a higher motivator to get out on the bicycle,” he says. “Any time I devote on land I want to be in the saddle, undertaking a little something that moves me towards my goals on the water—with individuals I can be competitive with, my mates who are professional athletes and Donny, who has been a large motivator in this article for the biking group.”

Last summer’s using was confined to Maui but with limitations lifting, this calendar year, Lenny is eyeing up a new challenge nicknamed The Hawaii 500.

“It starts from the significantly side of the Major Island of Hawaii, which is the farthest east and you journey west, then bounce on a hydrofoil and foil throughout the channel, journey a bicycle throughout Maui, and do each individual solitary island until eventually you wind up on the most west end of Kauai. It’s probably like 460 miles. We’re just waiting for all the islands to open up up. Ideally factors type of reset.”

Bear in head, this would not be on a standup-paddle foil but a “surf foil” exactly where you pump the board and journey open up ocean swell, preferably not slipping at all.

“It’s situation dependent,” he notes. “It will not be ideal on each individual leg but it will be pretty the journey.”

It always is with this dude.
